How to display an AI notice on a chatbot (Article 50)

The sentence to show, where to put it, and how to do it with Crisp, Intercom or Tidio — when the chat opens, not in the terms.

Article 50(1) requires a clear indication that it is AI when that is not obvious. An assistant named Léa, an avatar, instant replies: to a visitor, that is not “obviously a machine”.

Useful wording is short. “You are chatting with an automated assistant.” It must be in the page language, readable when the chat opens, not after three messages, not only in a tiny “learn more” link.

Where: next to the widget (above or beside the bubble), not in the legal notice, not in the vendor’s privacy policy. During the chat, the visitor will not open your terms.

Crisp: the Clairia script sits on the bubble and, on the first chat open in the session, also shows the sentence once in the thread. Intercom, Tidio and others: the notice stays the banner next to the launcher. Check on mobile: a banner that covers the chat button is useless.

WordPress, Shopify, PrestaShop: chat often arrives via a theme script or an app. The duty does not change. You do not need an “official” plugin to paste one line before </body>.

Only then: a register (tool name, vendor, support use) and a log of script loads. Without the visible notice, the PDF is pointless.

The path, in order

  1. 1

    Write a clear sentence

One line, site language, no jargon. “You are chatting with an automated assistant.” is a useful minimum.

  2. 2

Put it on the widget, not in the terms

When the chat opens. A script that follows the bubble (Crisp, Intercom, Tidio…) keeps it from disappearing in the footer.

  3. 3

    Check on a phone

Open the chat as a visitor. The notice must stay readable. On Crisp it can also appear once in the conversation.

  4. 4

    Scan the homepage

To see whether the homepage HTML already contains a notice, or only the bare widget.

Frequent questions

What sentence should I show?
A line such as “You are chatting with an automated assistant.” What matters: clear, in the visitor’s language, at the first interaction.
Do I have to write “artificial intelligence”?
The word “AI” alone on a marketing page does not count. You must say the exchange is automated, at the moment the person is chatting.
Do Crisp, Intercom or Tidio do this for me?
Not reliably for your site. Even a future native banner does not hold your register or your log. You are the deployer.
